Martin Smith

My research and work are concerned with people's perception and interpretation of space and objects. I make automata and kinetic sculpture, undertaking quite large architectural commissions that interact with their given space and the viewer through mechanical movement. Alongside this work, my practice is also concerned with making smaller mechanical devices that investigate themes of humour, nonsense and futility.

I originally designed and made The Applause Machine to gently poke fun at myself, as in ‘Artist makes a self-applauding machine’.
