Workshop: Shapes in the sky, making an origami mobile with Elizabeth Willow
Sunday 26th June 2022, 11am - 4.30pm
Before the workshop, please meet at the front of the main Bluecoat building where a member of Display Centre staff will greet you. Please note that Bluecoat Display Centre and The Bluecoat building will not be open to the public at the starting time of the workshop.
Elizabeth will lead this one-day workshop exploring the Japanese art of origami and teaching you to use beautiful papers to create a suspended sculpture of flying forms. Origami is a fascinating and meditative process, where square sheets of paper can be folded into a vast array of three-dimensional structures. Starting with simple shapes, then moving on to more complex forms, we will fold a flock of paper birds and insects. These can then be suspended from a twig, piece of driftwood or other found material, to create an elegant mobile that gently moves in the air, making patterns of light and shadow.
Elizabeth Willow makes intricate things from gathered materials, including paper, words, thread, and found objects both natural and unnatural, creating artist’s books, sculptures and installations. She is inspired by the physical and functional nature of objects and materials, and also by their symbolic qualities - how they act as repositories for meaning and memory, how we touch and are touched by them.
Elizabeth's mixed media work is featured in our Murmuration exhibition which runs from 6th May until 2nd July 2022.
