Skull and Rose Vessel by Anja Lubach
White porcelain wheel thrown dish with red rose decals and 3D relief of skulls and roses. These appear to push through the surface of the porcelain so light is more visible in those areas. The feet underneath also resemble skulls.
Dimensions: 10cm (H) x 23cm (Dia)
Skulls and flowers are traditionally depicted together in Mexico to challenge the perception of death as a morose subject. The combination of 3D relief skulls in white porcelain and bright joyful decals of roses, symbolising romance, love and beauty make these functional vessels a memeto mori, a reminder to appreciate life as death is inevitable.
Anja Lubach’s work explores the smooth, translucent and pure material properties of porcelain, through experimental manipulation of the soft clay surface. The textures and forms are evocative and the viewer will create their own narrative, depending on personal memory and imagination.
