Large Cylinder by Paul Wearing

This handmade stoneware vessel by Paul Wearing is made by press-moulding the base and coiling the walls; allowing Paul constant flexibility and control. Certain marks and textures revealing the making process remain as a ground for the glazing.

Paul's treatment of the glazed surface renders evidence of brush marks and chemical reactions. Glazing is a lively activity and the surface is transformed through the accumulated layers of slips and glazes:

"In areas they unite, fluxing together and in others, the glazes crawl, peel and pull away from the body revealing multiple layers and the body beneath. Embracing the imperfect and those qualities that would otherwise be considered faults, allows for expression through the materials themselves and their interactions." - Paul Wearing
