'Cumbrian Blue(s)' artworks juxtapose contemporary image and pattern with the historic to re-animate transferwares for the 21st century. Antique tablewares are re-worked by selective erasure, re-glazing, then the addition of newly printed decals. Other works involve specially commissioned ‘pearlware’ forms, traditional restoration processes, and extracted details from original transferwares in small Cuttings sculptures celebrating the detailed beauty of vitreous blue graphic.
A series of artworks in the exhibition question the narrow (sometimes fictional) histories of original printed wares. They examine issues surrounding globalization, climate chaos, immigration and racism.
